“To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wildflower...hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour... "

—William Blake

Creativity Exercise - September 2005

Earth

What do you think of? I think of rich loam, hidden gardens tangled with green vines and splashes of flowers. But I live in the plains and the mountains are an everyday wonder. And today, for no reason at all, I was remembering a couple of childhood vacations when we went to the Great Sand Dunes.

Exercise 1: Take a look at the photos below and use them as inspiration for a project. What strikes you the most? The huge amount of sand itself? The atmosphere of the place? The tracks made by people? Who are they, why are they there, what did they feel?

Exercise 2: Summer is mostly over and children back in school. So what was your favorite vacation in your life? Have you incorporated anything from that time into your work? Try it – the setting, the atmosphere of the place, people’s relationships…dialogue for you writers!

Affirmation

I look at objects both small and large with new eyes, knowing everything around me contains in itself inspiration for me.
